Imelda MayView Larger +

Imelda May Brings her Rockabilly Magic to Lupos tonight

Somehow, we count at least six different musical styles for just five musical artists this week. Each one is “5 Live” approved, personally curated by GoLocal Music Critic Ken Abrams.

Gangstagrass at Manchester 65

We caught a couple of great sets from the Hip-Hop/Blugrass act (yes, you read that right,) Gangstagrass at the Rhythm and Roots Festival this summer and quickly discovered these guys are the real deal. The band, who perform the theme song for the TV show Justified, brings blugrass strings and Hip Hop rhythms together like peanut butter and jelly. Ontologics, SCAMROCK, Dope Natas, Batmyte, Tall, White with Ransom open tonight at Manchester 65 beginning at 8PM. Tickets are $15.

Imelda May at Lupo’s

We caught Imelda May opening for none other than Bruce Springsteen last summer in Ireland. The “Boss approved” artist, who plays Lupos tomorrow night sings Jazz influenced Rockabilly with a modern beat. She’s touring on the heels of her new release Tribal. Boston’s Jittery Jack opens at Lupo's at 7PM, tickets are $17.50 in advance, $20 at the door.

Bohemian Quartet at Blackstone River Theatre

Also tomorrow night, world music fans should check out The Bohemian Quartet at the Blackstone River Theatre. The new season of folk, world and beyond is hitting its stride at the Theatre in Cumberland and the gypsy sounds of The Bohemian Quartet more than fit the bill. Tickets are $15 for the 8PM show co-sponsored by the Rhode Island State Council for the Arts.

Tower of Power at Park Theatre

The Fall concert season kicks off with a bang at the Park Theatre in Cranston Sunday where Tower of Power is performing. Known for their horn section, the band has toured for over 45 years with artists like Carlos Santana, Journey and Steve Miller. We caught the Tower of Power bug several years ago at a festival in Newport. A great evening is guaranteed! Show at 7:30PM - Tickets start at $35.

Vance Gilbert at Sandywoods

Also on Sunday, check out singer songwriter Vance Gilbert at Sandywoods. We’ve seen Gilbert a few times in these parts, most recently at the New Bedford Folk Festival. He’s an entertaining artist, full of stories, wisdom, and great songwriting. Show is Sunday at 7PM, tickets are $18 in advance, $20 at the door.
