Great Looks for New Year’s Eve

Monday, December 27, 2010

There’s nothing like a little shimmer and shine to capture the spirit of New Year’s Eve. With sequins being such a hot trend this season in clothing, shoes and accessories, it can be all too easy to go overboard (and no one wants to compete with the Swarovski crystal ball dropping in Times Square). Here are five chic ways to bring the bling on NYE with style and grace:

The Sequin Clutch

Decidedly sleek and with just enough room for the essentials—cash, cards and a lipstick—a jewel-encrusted clutch is the perfect subtle something to up the glamour ante on the big night. Choose one with a metallic silver or gold hue, like the ones we spotted at Feminine Fancies in Barrington, so you can complement it with your wardrobe the whole year through.

The Statement Dress

Sequin dresses are just about everywhere, and up the glam quotient in an instant. Tank necklines and loose silhouettes are best paired with dark opaque tights and matte footwear like suede knee-high or over-the-knee boots, or suede a chic pair of  this season’s hot “shooties.” Fitted silhouettes are figure-flattering showstoppers—turn up the heat by pairing with a bare leg and sky-high heel.

Fabulous Footwear

Silver, gold and metallic hued heels are sexy and sassy all at once. Pair with a monotone outfit and let them take center stage or coordinate with a shade in the same color family. Mixing metallics can work but be careful not to over-accessorize.

The Micro Mini or Pencil Skirt

Sequin skirts are one way to add a dash of sass without making too much of a splash. The season’s trend errs on the side of short or to the knee with no in-between. Complement a short sequin skirt with opaque tights in the same shade for a streamlined look. Pencil skirts are one of the most universally flattering looks, and sequin styles translate best in deep shades—black or jewel tones.

On Top

A sequin top, whether a cap sleeve, sleeveless or simple tank, gives even a casual ensemble an added oomph. Pair with a well-tailored pair of jeans (dark washes are the most slimming) from Kristina Richards Studio in Cranston and sexy heel for a night out on the town.
