Holiday Travel Weather … It Could Be A Whole Lot Worse

After nearly 50 years in the weather ”business”, I have yet to figure out what causes the attraction between holiday travel and nasty weather. Be that as it may it looks like we’re going to get somewhat of a break this week for the Thanksgiving pilgrimages over much of the country. Oh, for sure it won’t be perfect but at least I don’t see any major widespread blizzards or blockbuster storms that will shut down major airports here in the East. The upper Midwest may be another story by late in the weekend.

A moderate rainstorm over the Midwest will move into the east on Wednesday and zip out to sea by Thanksgiving morning. Any light snow from this should be confined to the Great Lakes states, far Upstate New York and perhaps far Northern New England. Another system will move into the Midwest with rain and snow on Saturday and Sunday but likely not affect the east until well into next week. That storm could become a major snowstorm for the Upper Midwest (including Chicago) from Sunday into early next week. The far west should be generally fair and dry throughout and in general temperatures should stay above normal over most of the country during the period.

Here in New England look for rain on Wednesday that will dry out by Thanksgiving morning. It should be chilly on Thanksgiving but temperatures should moderate into the 50s and perhaps 60s heading into the weekend. The Ghiorse Factor will dip to a 3 or so on Wednesday, recover to a 7 for Thanksgiving and likely be an 8 or 9 for Friday and the weekend.
