Sullivan, Bears Down Dartmouth 59-50

Brown head coach Mike Martin did not sugar coat his description of his team's loss Friday night to Harvard.  Martin called it a poor performance by himself, his staff and the entire team and vowed that it would not happen again.

If Martin was trying to send a message to his team, that message was received.

Brown came out of the gates Saturday night with much greater effort and intensity and parlayed that performance into a 59-50 victory over the Big Green.

Fast starts have not been the norm for the Bears who found themselves trailing by 11 points at halftime in each of their last three games.  Saturday, Brown raced out to a 16-point first half lead before some sloppy play in the final few seconds sent them to the locker room up by 9, 34-25.

Led by Matt Sullivan's 16 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists, the Bears were able to hold the Big Green at arm's length in the second half to improve to (10-14, 4-6 Ivy League).

Sullivan connected on 3 of his 7 three-point attempts on the night giving him 160 three's for his career.  That moves him into fifth place on Brown's career three point field goal list past Adrain Williams (159) and the school's all-time leading scorer Earl Hunt (158).

Sean McGonagill scored 13 points and handed out 7 assists playing a solid game at the point for the Bears.  Rafael Maia picked up 13 rebounds.

Tyler Melville was the only Dartmouth player in double figures with 14 points.  The loss drops the Big Green to (6-18, 2-8).

Brown will play its final road games of the year next weekend at Cornell (7pm) Friday night and at Columbia (6pm) on Saturday.

NOTES:

-Freshman Cedric Kuakumensah, plagued by foul trouble for the second consecutive night, picked up two blocks against Dartmouth bringing his season total to 53.  That's 6 blocks shy of Matt Mullery's single season record of 59 blocked shots in a single season.

-Sullivan's 16 points gives him 974 points for his career.  With four games remaining in his career, Sullivan will need to average just under 7 points per game to eclipse the 1,000 point plateau for his career.

-Dartmouth was without one of their most talented players - Jvonte Brooks over the weekend.  Brooks suffered a thumb injury two weeks ago and will be out for the remainder of the season.
