Put the optimism on hold.  Incoming freshman Kris Dunn will need surgery to repair a right shoulder injury keeping him on the shelf for up to 5 months.

Ed Cooley told ESPN.com that an MRI revealed that Dunn's injury was more serious than they had hoped requiring surgery that will keep the talented freshman guard on the shelf for quite some time.

According to the report, Dunn will have the surgery in about 2 weeks and be in a sling for approximately 3 months.  That will be followed by 2 months recovery.

The unfortunate part about the injury is that it occurred in March.  Had the severity of the injury been diagnosed at that time, it is possible that he could have had surgery at an earlier date, thus starting the clock on his lengthy recovery period earlier.  For instance, had Dunn had surgery at the beginning of April, he theoretically could have been through 5 months of recovery by the end of August.  However, that is not the case, so Dunn and the program are left to deal with the issue as best they can moving forward.

Cooley and Friar fans certainly hope that the school's other star incoming recruit - Ricky Ledo - is deemed eligible by the NCAA clearing house.  Otherwise fans may be looking at a team very similar to last year's squad come November.
