AJ Reeves has big game in bad loss to Georgetown

For the Rhode Islander who loves local sports, Saturday was a house of horrors. In a normal year, we would be planning for next weekend's Patriots appearance in the Super Bowl and loving all the home teams winning big games on Saturday.

Heck, it's New England and we always win.

Well, not on this Saturday.

PC — Ugly Loss to an Undermanned Georgetown

The Providence College men's basketball team was beaten by the Georgetown Hoyas, 73-72, on Saturday in Washington, DC. It was supposed to be an easy conference game for the taking for the Friars.

The loss ruined a huge performance by Friar A.J. Reeves, who arguably had his biggest game and finished with a game-high 28 points and a total of six threes.

The Hoyas however pounded the Friars on the boards (33-47), on loose balls and on the hustle.

The Friars now fall to 9-8 overall and 5-6 in BIG EAST play. The Friars have eight games left. They desperately need to get some consistency in order to punch their ticket to the Big Dance.

Russell only scored 4 points in URI loss

URI Run Off Court in Second Half

The URI Rams were leading the Dayton Flyers 32-29 at halftime. If your cable went down at that point and you missed the rest of the game, then you had a better day.

The Flyers went on a 26-5 (15-0) run against the Rams. Fatts Russell was limited to four points in just 19 minutes. He suffered a foot injury in the first half.

He did become the 17th player in program history to reach 1,500 career points.

Small solace, Dayton won 67-56.

Rhode Island falls to 9-9 and 6-5 Atlantic-10.

URI’s situation is now more desperate. The A-10 is likely to only place two teams in the NCAA tournament - right now the Rams are 7th in the conference.

Bryant’s “Bad” Loss

The Bryant Bulldogs lost a critical Northeast Conference game Saturday. Bryant was in first place in the league going into the game.

Junior Chris Childs scored a season-high 22 points and sophomore Charles Pride registered his third double-double of the year but Fairleigh Dickinson erased a seven-point deficit in the final two minutes to defeat the Bryant University men's basketball team, 81-79.

Bryant falls to 10-4 and 6-3 in the Northeast. Bryant plays FDU again on Sunday and has seven more conference games.

Jayson Tatum has big game against the Lakers

Celtics Lose to Lakers

The Celtics wasted the performance of the superstar tandem of Jason Tatum and Jaylen Brown, who erupted for 58 points on an effective 25-of-37 clip.

But Kemba Walker missed an open jumper in the final seconds that would have won the game. He was 1-12 from the floor, a plus/minus of -8 (worst among all starters), and four points.

Ouch.

But perhaps more concerning for the Celtics was that Marcus Smart suffered a leg injury and was forced to leave the game.

Bruins Lose to Capitals in Overtime

The night of pain for local sports fans continued with the Bruins losing to the Washington Capitals -- and the former Bruins captain Zdeno Chara.

Tuukka Risk gave up two soft goals early and forced the B’s to scramble. The Bruins forced the game into OT, but the Capitals' Alex Ovechkin scored the game-winning goal in his return from COVID-19 protocols.

Let’s look forward to the blizzard. It has to be better.
