It hasn’t been easy for Brad Faxon the past few years. He’s hoping that will change starting today in Blaine, Minnesota.

Having just turned 50 on Monday, The Pride of Rhode Island will tee it up for the first time ever on the Champions Tour at the 3M Championship at TPC Twin Cities with many players and friends that he once competed with on the PGA Tour.

For a variety of reasons, Faxon has struggled to compete on the PGA Tour in recent years. Injuries have played a large role in that as well as all of the young, super-talented players now joining the Tour. For that reason, he has been looking forward to this moment for quite some time.

“I’m really looking forward to it,” Faxon said last month at his CVS/Caremark Charity Classic golf tournament. “I’m hoping that once I get on the Champions Tour that I will be more competitive again like I was once out here on the PGA Tour.”

This year Faxon has been biding his time waiting for his opportunity to tee it up on the Champions Tour. He has played in 12 events on the PGA Tour but has not made a cut.

Still, he is not too far removed from his days of success on Tour. In 2005, he had a banner year on Tour earning $1.7 million dollars which included a victory in Hartford at the Buick Championship.

While Faxon is, by his own admission, not the longest or most accurate driver of the golf ball, his short game is still one of the best on either tour. He is still one of the premier putters in the sport who others seek for advice on that aspect of the game.

A 9-time winner on the PGA Tour, Faxon was a member of two US Ryder Cup teams in 1995 and 1997. His career earnings of just under $18 million places him 42nd on the career earnings list.

But as accomplished as Faxon may be in professional golf, it is what he has done and continues to do for this community that makes him stand out as a true great.

Whether it’s through the CVS/Caremark Charity Classic or the Andrade-Faxon Charities for Children endeavor, he has helped raise tens of millions of dollar for local charities. Even more important than those numbers, is the personal time he has dedicated to local children’s charities.

Brad Faxon is one of a kind. May he find all that he is looking for and more on the Champions Tour.
