Cumberland wins D-2 Girls’ Lacrosse Title

Cumberland High School defeated Tiverton, 12-10, to win the girls’ Division II lacrosse championship at Rhode Island College on Sunday night.
The Lady Clippers (18-1, 14-0) used a 6-0 second-half run to turn a 7-5 halftime deficit into an 11-5 lead and won a thrilling back-and-forth contest. Chloe Andrews scored three goals in that span.
Andrews won the game’s Most Outstanding Player award by scoring 4 goals and assisting on 3 more.

The run began after Carpenter called a timeout with just over 15 minutes to go in the second half.
“I just thought we needed to settle down,” he said. “We were running around on defense and playing anxious. I thought we were too anxious to help on defense, and that’s been our forte all season long. I just told them, the rules haven’t changed. The expectations haven’t changed, even though this is a much bigger stage than we’re used to being on. Just go out and play your game.”
Allie Sheehan added 2 goals and an assist for Cumberland, and Lindsay Sheehan, Maddie Andrews and Sophie Kisseberth each scored goals. Sheehan and Andrews also picked up an assist each.
Samantha Welchamn and Kara Lotz led Tiverton with 3 goals apiece. Jacqueline Wilson and Olivia Burgundy each scored twice for the Tigers (16-3).
