Brown Upsets URI in Kingston - Rams Outscored by Bears 12-1 in Final Minutes

The University of Rhode Island men's basketball team was outscored 12-1 over the final 5:29 as it suffered a 59-58 loss to in-state rival Brown Wednesday night.

The Rams (2-7) led 57-47 following a Malik Martin free throw with 5:49 to go.

From there, URI missed its final six field goal attempts and had three turnovers in the final four minutes, which allowed Brown (6-4) to complete the late rally.

The visiting Bears did not lead at any point until Kimo Ferrari hit a second-chance 3-point shot with 55 seconds to go. It was his first field goal of the night. The Bears have won five games in a row.

Brown was let by Kino Lilly Jr. with 14 points.

Despite turning the ball over with 40 seconds to go, the Rams came up with a defensive stop to get the ball for a final possession with nine seconds to go. Malik Martin managed a 3-point attempt, but the shot went off the rim, sending the Rams to their third straight loss.

STATS

Though both teams turned the ball over 12 times, Brown had a 16-9 edge in points off turnovers.
The Rams were outrebounded 43-35. Brown had 13 offensive boards compared to four for the Rams.
Sophomore guards Ishmael Leggett and Brayon Freeman each scored 14 points to lead Rhode Island.
Leggett added six rebounds, while Freeman had a team-high four assists.
Redshirt senior Malik Martin had 13 points, seven rebounds and two assists.
Redshirt sophomore Josaphat Bilau had five points, seven rebounds and five blocked shots. He also made his third consecutive 3-point attempt.
Redshirt freshman Abdou Samb had seven points, three rebounds and two assists.
The Rams were just 5-of-10 at the free throw line, the first time this season the Rams have not made at least 10 from the line.
