The man who is considered to be the most successful commissioner in American pro sports history has died.

The NBA announced the passing of former league commissioner David Stern on Wednesday.

Stern was 77 years old.

The former commissioner passed away as a result of a brain hemorrhage he suffered about three weeks ago, the league’s statement said.

Stern served as NBA commissioner for 30 years, beginning in 1984.
