Want to Run for Office in RI - Here Are Some Tools and Deadlines

It is time.

If you have always wanted to run for office, you only have a few days to register as a candidate.

Secretary of State Gregg Amore and the RI Department of State Elections Division are reminding potential candidates of the upcoming filing period for candidate declaration forms.

And the Board of Elections to Hosting an Elections 101.

For those considering running, declarations of candidacy must be filed on June 24, 25, or 26. The deadline to file is June 26 at 4 p.m.

Candidates for federal offices must file with the RI Department of State Elections Division (148 W. River Street, Providence) and candidates for state and local offices file with their local board of canvassers. Forms must be printed and physically signed, and cannot be emailed or faxed. 

Forms are available now online, or in-person at the RI Department of State or local boards of canvassers’ offices.

Nomination papers for declared candidates will be available to pick up on July 2. All nomination papers must be submitted to the correct local board of canvassers on or before July 12 at 4 p.m., with the exception of nomination papers for independent presidential electors, which are due on or before September 6.

The ballot placement lottery will be held on July 19, 2024 at 5 p.m. at the RI Department of State Elections Division.

 

Elections 101: An Evening About Rhode Island Elections

Elections 101: An Evening About Rhode Island Elections, will be held at the Board of Elections' headquarters (2000 Plainfield Pike, Cranston, RI 02921) on Tuesday, June 18th from 5:30-7:30 PM. The event is designed to give Rhode Island voters, candidates, and party officials an overview of how voting works in our state ahead of the September 10th primary and November 5th general elections.

 

It is the opportunity to hear from Board of Elections staff about the mail ballot process, early voting, in-person voting, how voting machines work, drop boxes, results reporting, and post-election risk limiting audits. Voting machine demonstrations will be available and tours of our facility will also be offered.
