The Alliance for Retired Americans, which has about 20,000 Rhode Island members, has endorsed David Cicilline for Congress.

“With right-wing elements already mobilizing to let Wall Street run a privatized Social Security, we need representatives in Congress who will fight to protect this 75-year-old program,” said ARA President Barbara Easterling. “David Cicilline has demonstrated a commitment to older Americans throughout his life in public service and we are confident he will do everything he can to protect Social Security in Congress.”

The group cited Cicilline’s commitments to affordable health care, quality long-term care, and “stronger” retirement and pension security. Cicilline’s campaign also noted that he opposes privatization of Social Security, saying his Republican opponent, John Loughlin supports. Cicilline also is against raising the retirement age or reducing benefits.

“I’m grateful for the confidence the Alliance for Retired Americans is showing in my campaign,” said Cicilline. “Social Security is a promise we made to our seniors 75 years ago, and it’s a promise we have to keep. If I am elected to Congress, I will do everything I can to make sure we protect this program and never gamble seniors’ benefits in the stock market.”
