Democratic State Representative Shelby Maldonado is resigning from her position effective immediately. 

“I have enjoyed representing the city of Central Falls, a community where I have lived my entire life and the people have given me so many opportunities. I thank my House colleagues for taking in Central Falls as part of their agenda and enabling me to be an effective legislator on behalf of the community.  From our previous difficult times in receivership, the city is moving forward in a very positive direction," said Maldonado in a statement on Monday. 

Maldonado is relocating to New York City to take a position as the Hispanic Outreach Director of the American Israeli Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC).

Giraldo Announces Candidacy 

Shortly after Maldonado's announcment, City of Central Falls Chief of Staff Joshua Giraldo announced his candidacy for the vacant seat.

“I was surprised to learn that Representative Shelby Maldonado is stepping down after serving the people of Central Falls with honor and distinction. I wish her the best in her new endeavors. After careful consideration and consultation with my family, I have decided to run to represent District 56 in the General Assembly. Central Falls has made tremendous progress over the past several years, and as Representative, I will work hard to ensure that we continue moving forward together,” said Giraldo in a statement on Facebook.

According to his bio on Facebook, Giraldo previously worked at Dorcas Place Adult and Family Learning Center.

He is also the former Director of Parks and Recreation for Central Falls.

He graduated from Providence College.

According to the House of Representatives, a special election will be held. 

A date for the election has not yet been held. 

About Maldonado

Maldonado (D) was first elected in November 2014 to the House of Representatives in District 56, Central Falls.

She was named a Deputy Majority Leader in January 2019.

She served as the second vice chairwoman of both the House Committee on Municipal Government and the House Committee on Conduct, and she is a member of the House Committee on Health, Education and Welfare, the House Committee on Small Business and the House Committee on Special Legislation.

Prior to her election to the House, she was a member of the Central Falls City Council.

Born July 24, 1987, she graduated from Central Falls High School and received her degree, majoring in political science and communication studies, from the University of Rhode Island in 2009.
