Outgoing State Rep. Joe Almeida

I want to recognize Attorney General Peter F. Neronha for creating a legal team dedicated to fighting for racial injustice and civil-rights. I discussed these issues at length on the house floor on more than one occasion.

Civil-rights and racial justice have become a hot-button issue across the country, especially in diverse places like Rhode Island. All too often lately, we hear of another person of color, becoming a victim of police misconduct.

While George Floyd is the most familiar name, our diverse community can attest that more law enforcement oversight will benefit everyone. Every other day, there seems to be another divisive issue that challenges our country's moral and ethical foundation.

Our minority community deals with some unique challenges, whether it is getting affordable housing or even just voting. These individuals are living under challenging circumstances simply because of the color of their skin.

Neronha's new legal team will investigate the challenges that impact our minority community. At long last, Rhode Island will have a legal team discussing and communicating with those who feel society let them down; a team that will look out for the interests of our minorities when something doesn't seem equitable.

I believe our police force consists of many good people who want to protect the most vulnerable people in the community. Still, sometimes members of the law enforcement community fall short. Greater oversight will ensure susceptible people are protected from any potential misconduct.

With Neronha's new team, I believe our minority community will have more of a voice. It won't be perfect, but it will be an improvement over the status quo.

Joe Almeida is the outgoing Rhode Island State Representative for the 12th District representing South Side and Washington Park in Providence.
