Meet candidate William Hunt. He is running as a Libertarian in District 68 for State Representative.

1.  What do you think is the biggest political issue this campaign season in Rhode Island?

Trust. Rhode Island Legislators have a serious trust issue.

For the most part the general public is pretty understanding - they have know for a long time that the state government is far from perfect. In the past there has been a perception that our legislator's intentions were good but their execution and the results of their endeavors have just missed the mark. Over the past four years that perception has changed. During the past two years I think the voters in this state have lost all trust in their elected officials.

The leadership in our state have repeatedly gone beyond the pale while unilaterally implementing agendas that clearly benefit special interests at the expense of RI taxpayers. Meaningful legislation only seems to be passed as a reaction to scandal while the balance of their work gets pushed through the last day of session to avoid scrutiny. This system is broken and the process needs to be changed.

2.  What do we need to do to improve Rhode Island's economy?

Instead of coming up with new government programs and bigger and better ideas, I am a firm believer that RI already has the people and resources in place to be successful. Our state just needs to take the resources that we have in place and make them more effective and efficient. It is time to get back to basics.

The government does not create jobs, it is the small businesses owners (who make up the majority of RI's economy) who create the jobs and drive the economy in our state. Instead of making it harder to do business with more regulation, bureaucracy, and red tape, the mission of every state employee should be to make taxpayers' lives easier. There is a lot of rhetoric about how we need to move this state forward. That is a difficult proposition if we don't have all stakeholders pulling in the same direction.

3.  What is the greatest challenge facing Rhode Island as a state?

The state income tax, which is 39th highest in the country, is the greatest challenge facing every single Rhode Islander.

While the legislature has made some progress reducing our corporate tax burden, most of the current business owners in our state (and many of the new entrepreneurs we would like to attract) don't actually pay their taxes at the corporate rate. Small business owners typically pay their taxes as individual filers. Regardless of all other issues this state faces, from a strictly financial standpoint, there are 38 better states for someone to open a business - seven states that have no income tax at all.

In a modern economy, your personal freedom is closely tied to your financial freedom. Every time the government taxes you and takes money out of your paycheck, they are taking away your freedom.

4.  Why are you running for office? What makes you uniquely qualified?

I am running for office because I truly want to see this state be successful. I am running as a Libertarian because I understand that the majority party in our state has no reason to change and no bias for action.

Working in the P&C insurance industry has provided me with the opportunity to work hand in hand with the small business owners I am fighting for. I understand the challenges they face and want to bring their common sense solutions to the state house. My knowledge of and experience implementing six sigma and lean management techniques will help me work towards my goal of a more effective and efficient state government. My passion, leadership, and work ethic demonstrate that I am seeking office to represent the constituents that elected me, not the special interests and lobbyists who are just looking to buy influence to advance their own agenda.

5.  Who is your inspiration?

My family is my inspiration. I am blessed to have two caring and supportive parents, humbled from growing up with three sisters who kept me in line, and extremely lucky to have a beautiful and loving wife. Like most native Rhode Islanders, I love this state and am frustrated that my friends and family have been forced to leave because of bad decisions made by the people elected to represent them.

I am inspired to be a representative that you can be proud of, working for a state that other states will strive to emulate. On November 8th, there's #HopeWithHunt
