A flyer calling attention to Congressional candidate David Cicilline’s sexual orientation has sparked outrage.
The flyer in part reads: “Alert!!! Before you vote for U.S. Congress, you should know that… John Loughlin is a husband and father and believes in traditional family values. …Cicilline is an openly gay man who supports same sex marriage." The flyer also calls attention to Cicilline's positions on abortion and illegal immigration. (See below for an image of the flyer.)
A reader who e-mailed a copy of the flyer to GoLocalProv said it had been slipped under a door at the Parkview Manor in Woonsocket. The flyer does not identify who is behind it.
GET THE LATEST BREAKING NEWS HERE -- SIGN UP FOR GOLOCAL FREE DAILY EBLASTRich Luchette, a spokesman for Cicilline, said the campaign had received dozens of calls in the morning from “outraged seniors” in the Woonsocket area. “This looks like the latest in a long line of anonymous negative attacks that our opponents have tried to use to distort David’s record and distract voters from the issues in this election,” Luchette said.
The Loughlin campaign said it did not issue the flyer. “Obviously we had nothing to do with that and that’s not what this campaign is about,” said Loughlin Campaign Manager Cara Cromwell.
