Former Cranston Mayor and GOP candidate for Rhode Island's second congressional district appeared on GoLocal LIVE and discussed everything from inflation to abortion rights to the future of Donald Trump.

Fung hit on a consistent theme — what he said were his successes in Cranston and how he can transfer his skills to Congress.

“I want to get down to it, to fix these problems, just like what I fixed in Cranston," said Fung. "You know I’ve got the right skill sets to lead down there, in the way I did in Cranston working across the aisle bringing common sense solutions and leadership to the table.”

Inflation

Fung said the number one issue facing Rhode Islanders is inflation. He blames the Biden administration and Democrats, saying they have done a poor job managing and controlling prices.

Guns

Fung said he would have voted for the recently passed bi-partisan gun control legislation, but said he would not support Congressman David Cicilline’s (RI-1) legislation to ban assault rifles.

“I would not support a bill that banned firearms from law-abiding citizens,” said Fung.

Abortion

“Well, here's the thing -- the decision by the Supreme Court kicks the decision back to the states and in Rhode Island back in 2019 when they passed that law — a woman's right to make that decision, it's kind of confirmed it, you know you know codifies [Roe v. Wade]," said Fung/

“I'm not with Jen Psaki [former White House press secretary] and the Democrats are saying abortion up to the last day because I don't support late-term abortions unless it's for the life of the mother, rape or incest," said Fung.

“I would protect the ability for a woman to make that decision -- I'm not on the other end of spectrum either where it's like ban everything criminalize it but you know having early access to [a] decision within guidelines similar to what your [personal] standards would be. I won't support taxpayer-funded abortion but like I said a lot of those rights are already codified,” said Fung.

When asked if Ri’s codification of Roe v. Wade should be the national law, Fung said, “I am more of a states rights person.”

Trump

Fung said he does not support another run for President by Donald Trump. He said the party needs to move forward with new candidates.

First Minority in Congress for RI?

Fung spoke with pride about the potential of serving as the first person of color to represent Rhode Island in Washington, DC.

“I remember their story [of his parents] of coming over this country not knowing word of English to start a Chinese restaurant 35 years ago that they ran in Cranston," said Fung. "I worked hard in there but to see, you know, be able to see their son grow up to not only serve as mayor but hopefully do more to serve all of Rhode Island would be an honor for me and my family but most importantly, I think what I love about the opportunity is it could kick open that 'bamboo ceiling' not just for Asians but for many minorities to be the first person of color in that delegation would be historic."
