Election night 2022 was a night of surprises — Dan McKee was the mega-winner in Rhode Island sweeping to victory by an unexpected margin.

The big night for Republicans in Rhode Island and the expected national red tidal wave never happened.

Turnout was expected to be low, and it was.

It was lower than in 2018 —  the gubernatorial vote was about 20,000 votes lower, but it was nearly 30,000 higher than in 2014.

GoLocal called the two biggest races — gubernatorial and congressional — first on election night.

Today, we break down all the winners and losers in the 2022 election.

WINNER

Dan McKee

Rhode Island elected Governor Dan McKee to a four-year term.

McKee was leading throughout the campaign by 8 to 10 percent in public and private polls, but in the end, he hammered Republican Ashley Kalus by nearly 19 points.

McKee will be sworn in January with a mandate.

WINNERS

Democrats - Clean Sweep

Leading Washington pundits, like the Cook Report, had the second congressional district changing from Blue to Red with an Allan Fung victory.

But, Democrat Seth Magaziner rode early voting and mail ballots to pile up the votes. Magaziner captured 50.3% to Fung's 46.9%.

Magaziner joins a clean sweep by the Democrats for the general offices -- Rhode Island has Democrats in the four congressional seats and all five general offices.

LOSERS

Progressives (Political Cooperative)

Matt Brown and Jennifer Rourke launch a progressive movement in 2018 called "The Political Cooperative." In 2022, the organization recruited and helped to fund dozens of candidates.

But the movement was a bust. Matt Brown finished a distant 4th in the Democratic primary.

Rourke won the Democratic primary, but was beaten in the general election by Republican Anthony Phillip DeLuca, II, who got backing from conservative Democrats like Joe Shekarchi.

LOSER

Ashley Kalus

"The Fighter" spent about $5 million dollars of her own money in an effort to win the governorship, but it was not to be.

She got knocked out -- losing to Governor Dan McKee by 66,000 votes. Kalus failed to get 40% of the vote.

She has lived in Illinois and Florida in recent years, will she stay in Rhode Island to fight another day?

The former Providence City Councilor was underestimated in the Democratic primary and won it handily.

Then, she faced a tough challenge from Republican Aaron Guckian -- Matos beat him 51% to 43%.

WINNER

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis

The GOP rival to Donald Trump won a mega-victory over Democrat Charlie Crist. Don DeSantis was the biggest Republican winner on Tuesday night.

With many of Trump's candidates losing, the win by DeSantis sets up a major battle in the GOP presidential primary between the two GOP stars.

LOSERS

RI GOP

It was another disappointing night for the Rhode Island Republican party.

Election day started with hopes that the GOP would pick up a congressional seat, and there was a growing confidence in the party that Ashley Kalus could steal the governor's race.

The GOP was making noise that Aaron Guckian could take out Sabina Matos.

At the end of the day, it was a nightmare night for the Republicans.

Since the party shifted from a moderate alternative to machine Democrats, the RIGOP has floundered.
