Chafee: More Unpaid Taxes?
Thursday, October 14, 2010
Frank Caprio is accusing Lincoln Chafee of not paying taxes from interest earned from his mayoral campaign accounts—after reports that he had not paid taxes on his Senate and current gubernatorial campaigns.
“He didn't pay taxes on his Senate campaign,” said Caprio spokesman Nick Hemond. “Then we found out he failed to pay them on his gubernatorial campaign, despite being asked almost half a year ago if he should. Now let’s see if Chafee paid the taxes he owed from his mayoral bids from the nineties or did he somehow fail to pay those too.”
The Caprio campaign said that it had been unable to find any record of taxes paid during his final years as mayor. A GoLocalProv review of the campaign finance reports for his last full two years as mayor—1997 and 1998—show that Chafee earned $480.66 in interest. However, the available reports for 1997, 1998, and 1999 do now indicate that any taxes were paid on that money.

Chafee has said the non-paid taxes from his Senate and gubernatorial campaigns were an honest mistake. His campaign has paid back the owed taxes for both.
The mayoral campaign taxes is the latest twist in the issue of unpaid taxes. It comes on the heels of a statement Caprio released earlier this week, calling on the Division of Taxation to conduct a review of all campaigns in Rhode Island to determine whether they owed any state or federal taxes.
