Charles E. Plante, 95, of Rumford, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, December 4, 2021. He was the beloved husband of late Phyllis E. (Brown) Plante. Born in Cranston on July 5, 1926, he was one of nine children of the late Amos and Clarinna (Dionne) Plante.

Charlie was a veteran of World War II and served in the United States Army in Europe. As an infantry soldier, he was assigned to a mortar squad where he carried and placed the heavy steel base plate that supported the mortar when it was fired. After the Axis Alliance surrendered, Charlie traveled throughout Germany and witnessed the aftermath of the war. Charlie enjoyed reading and sharing stories of his experiences during the Second World War so that future generations would understand the significance of that time and the sacrifices of so many during those trying years of our nation’s history.

Following the war, Charlie worked at Central Tool, Cranston, until his retirement. Although he and Phyllis did not have children of their own, Charlie volunteered as a Boy Scouts leader and for various youth-related activities at his church. Charlie was a long-time member of Associated Radio Amateurs of Southern New England. For many years he spent Friday evenings with his club friends troubleshooting technical issues and communicating via radio with other ham radio enthusiasts across town and around the world.

Charlie touched many people’s lives with his gentle spirit, kind heart, and humble disposition. He was dearly loved and will be missed by many nieces, nephews, friends, and neighbors.

A private Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at St. Margaret Church in Rumford.

Interment with Military Honors will be in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston.

Calling hours and flowers are respectfully omitted.

Memorial gifts to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675 would be appreciated.
