Reinaldo “Purry” Ponce Dies at 67

Reinaldo “Purry” Ponce passed away peacefully at Rhode Island Hospital on Monday, July 18, 2022. He was 67 years old. 

Born in Matanzas, Cuba, Reinaldo immigrated to the United States in 1980, where he lived in Boston, Massachusetts; Deerfield Beach, Florida; and in most recent years, Providence, Rhode Island.

A man with a heart of gold and a fun-loving spirit, he worked as an auto and marine mechanic and was a reliant handyman to friends and family. In the words of his daughter Jenny, he “loved hard.” He was a dear friend to many in his Providence community.

He is survived by his brother, Juan Manuel Rodríguez and his wife Virginia of Johnston, Rhode Island; his former spouse Cecilia Santana of Pompano Beach, Florida; seven children and eight grandchildren: Katileidys Ponce of Matanzas, Cuba; Reynaldo Ponce and his wife Melissa of Watertown, Massachusetts; Giovanni Ponce and his wife Rebecca, Jenil “Jenny” Ponce, Kaila Ponce and her partner Daniel Montalvo, all of Pompano Beach, Florida; Brendan Ponce and his partner Kenia Infante of Coconut Creek, Florida; and Ricardo “Angel” Ponce of Margate, Florida.  He is also survived by his niece, Gina Rodríguez-Drix of Providence, Rhode Island; nephews Jorge Rodríguez of West Park, Florida; Andrés Rodríguez, Yosvanni Ponce and Erik Ponce, all of Matanzas, Cuba. He is predeceased by his brother, Juan Carlos Ponce. 

The family requests masks be worn during the service, which will also be live-streamed.

Reinaldo “Purry” Ponce falleció pacíficamente en el Hospital de Rhode Island el lunes 18 de julio de 2022. Tenía 67 años.

Nacido en Matanzas, Cuba, Reinaldo emigró a los Estados Unidos en 1980 donde vivió en Boston, Massachusetts; Deerfield Beach, Florida; y en los años más recientes Providence, Rhode Island. Un hombre con un corazón de oro y un espíritu amante de la diversión, trabajó como mecánico de automóviles y marinos y fue un el hombre hábil para amigos y familiares. En palabras de su hija Jenny, él “amaba mucho”. Era un querido amigo de muchos en su comunidad de Providence.
 
Le sobreviven su hermano, Juan Manuel Rodríguez y su esposa Virginia de Johnston, Rhode Island; su ex esposa Cecilia Santana de Pompano Beach, Florida; siete hijos y ocho nietos: Katileidys Ponce de Matanzas, Cuba; Reynaldo Ponce y su esposa Melissa de Watertown, Massachusetts; Giovanni Ponce y su esposa Rebecca, Jenil “Jenny” Ponce, Kaila Ponce y su pareja Daniel Montalvo, todos de Pompano Beach, Florida; Brendan Ponce y su pareja Kenia Infante de Coconut Creek, Florida; y Ricardo “Ángel” Ponce de Margate, Florida. También le sobreviven su sobrina, Gina Rodríguez-Drix de Providence, Rhode Island; sobrinos Jorge Rodríguez de West Park, Florida; Andrés Rodríguez, Yosvanni Ponce y Erik Ponce, todos de Matanzas, Cuba. Le antecede su hermano, Juan Carlos Ponce.

Se llevará a cabo un servicio conmemorativo en honor y celebración de su vida en Bell Funeral Home en Providence, Rhode Island, el 26 de julio de 2022 de 5 a 8 p. m. La familia solicita que se usen máscaras durante el memorial.
