Former PC Athletic Director and Big East Commissioner, John M. Marinatto, Dies

John M. Marinatto, 63, of Lincoln, passed away suddenly on Saturday, June 12, 2021 at Rhode Island Hospital.
Born in Providence, He was predeceased by his parents John and Edith (Calise) Marinatto. He leaves behind his beloved brother Peter Marinatto of West Warwick and several cousins.
He graduated from Providence College in 1979. As an undergraduate, he worked for the head basketball coach as Team Manager of the men’s basketball team. After graduation, he went on to serve as Sports Information Director and then was appointed Vice President/Director of Athletics in 1987.
In his role, he administered a 21-sport department where he impacted the lives and careers of countless student-athletes, coaches, and administrators during and after their days at PC. In so many ways, the Providence College family became John’s lifelong passion. He worked tirelessly and could be found at his desk all hours of the day and night. His love and efforts for Providence College were endless prompting his colleagues to note that “John bleeds Black and White” the colors of the college he so loved.
In 2000, John became Senior Associate Commissioner of the Big East Conference followed by Commissioner where he oversaw its expansion. He served on many of the NCAA’s most prestigious committees including the NCAA Management & Leadership Council as well as the Business and Finance cabinet. In recent years John served as special assistant to the Colonial Athletic Association Commissioner.
Funeral from Nardolillo Funeral Home & Crematory, 1278 Park Avenue, Cranston, on Monday at 10 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mary’s Church, Cranston at 11 a.m.
Committal prayers will take place immediately after Mass in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston.
Visiting hours are on Monday morning from 8:30-10:00 a.m.
