Barney Frank, the blunt-spoken Massachusetts congressman who helped shape modern financial regulation and became one of the most prominent openly gay politicians in American history, died at 86 in hospice.

Frank served more than three decades in the U.S. House of Representatives, representing Massachusetts’ 4th Congressional District from 1981 to 2013. A Democrat known for his sharp wit and command of policy, he rose to chair the House Financial Services Committee during the 2008 financial crisis, where he played a central role in crafting the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act.

Born March 31, 1940, in Bayonne, New Jersey, Frank graduated from Harvard College in 1962. He entered politics early, working as an aide to Boston Mayor Kevin White before winning a seat in the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1972. He was elected to Congress eight years later.

Frank became a leading voice on housing policy, banking oversight, and civil rights. In 1987, he publicly came out as gay, becoming one of the first members of Congress to do so voluntarily. Over time, he emerged as a key advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, helping to shift public attitudes and policy.

Known for his quick retorts and plainspoken style, Frank was both respected and criticized for his forceful approach to politics. Supporters praised his intellect and legislative skill, while critics often clashed with his regulatory views, particularly during debates over financial reform.

After retiring from Congress in 2013, Frank remained active in public life as a commentator, author, and occasional advisor on financial policy. He also served on corporate boards and continued to speak on issues ranging from banking regulation to civil liberties.

Frank married Jim Ready in 2012, becoming the first sitting member of Congress to enter into a same-sex marriage.

Funeral arrangements were not immediately announced.
