Opponents: Wind Farm Like RI’s ‘Big Dig’
Wednesday, May 19, 2010
Government watchdog organizations and conservative groups yesterday announced their opposition to a series of bills that would allow a plan for a wind farm off the coast of Rhode Island to move forward.
One of the bills would allow four state agencies to approve a proposed contract between National Grid and Deepwater Wind, bypassing the Public Utilities Commission, which has rejected the deal.
The groups opposed included the Rhode Island Tea Party, Operation Clean Government, and several taxpayer advocates. Speakers warned that the wind farm would result in higher electricity rates for Rhode Islanders. One described the wind farm into Rhode Island's version of the "Big Dig."
