Trump’s Justice Department Drops Probe of Jerome Powell

The Justice Department said it was ending its criminal investigation of Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell.
This comes four months after the probe was announced.
This morning the Inspector General for the Federal Reserve has been asked to scrutinize the building costs overruns – in the billions of dollars – that have been borne by taxpayers.
The IG has the authority to hold the Federal Reserve accountable to American taxpayers. I expect a comprehensive report in short order and am confident the outcome will assist in resolving, once and for all, the questions that led this office to issue subpoenas.
Accordingly, I have directed my office to close our investigation as the IG undertakes this inquiry. Note well, however, that I will not hesitate to restart a criminal investigation should the facts warrant doing so.

This reversal by Justice is likely to clear the way for Kevin Warsh’s confirmation as Powell’s successor.
United States Senator Elizabeth Warren, Ranking Member of the Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee, and a harsh critic of Warsh released the following statement:
“This is just an attempt to clear the path for Senate Republicans to install President Trump’s sock puppet Kevin Warsh as Fed Chair. Let’s be clear what the Justice Department announced today: they threatened to restart the bogus criminal investigation into Fed Chair Powell at any time while failing to drop their ridiculous criminal probe against Governor Lisa Cook. Anyone who believes Donald Trump’s corrupt scheme to take over the Fed is over is fooling themselves. The Senate should not proceed with the nomination of Kevin Warsh.”
