Previous to his judicial appointment, he was Staff Secretary in the Executive Office of the President of the United States under President George W. Bush.

And, he was a key staffer under Kenneth Starr’s investigation into the Clinton Administration.

Kavanaugh spoke at the press conference on Monday, speaking to his upbringing -- and judicial views.

"My introduction to the law came at the dinner table," said Kavanaugh, quoting his mother, who said, "Use your common sense -- what rings true, what rings false."

"That's good advice for a juror, and for a son," said Kavanaugh.

Kavanaugh also spoke to his view of the Constitution,"A judge must be independent and interpret the law, and interpret the Constitution as written," said Kavanaugh. "Informed by tradition, history, and precedent."

The NRA voiced immediate support for Trump's nominee, "#ScotusPick “On behalf of our six million members, the NRA strongly supports Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation to the U.S. Supreme Court. We will be activating our members and tens of millions of supporters throughout the country in support of Judge Kavanaugh." – @ChrisCoxNRA"

And Democrats came out blazing,

DNC Chair Tom Perez released the following statement after President Trump announced Judge Brett Kavanaugh as his nominee to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court:

“Judge Kavanaugh should not be allowed anywhere near our nation’s highest bench. Let’s be clear: a vote for Kavanaugh would be a vote to rip health care from American families and deny women their constitutional right to make their own health care decisions.

"We know exactly why Kavanaugh was chosen. President Trump himself said that overturning Roe v. Wade and gutting the Affordable Care Act would be litmus tests for his Supreme Court nominee, and Kavanaugh fits the script. He’s suggested a future president could refuse to enforce the Affordable Care Act, even if it was upheld by the Supreme Court. And he dissented from a ruling that upheld the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act’s birth control benefit."
