According to Pawtucket Police Chief Tina Goncalves:
Shortly before 7:30 pm last night, June 28th, a vehicle occupied by three family members drove into the Seekonk River near the Taft Street boat ramp. A Good Samaritan riding a jet ski in the vicinity heard the car enter the water and attempted to help. While this was occurring, another individual called 911, and first responders were on scene within 3 minutes. At this time, Pawtucket Police and Pawtucket Fire, along with support from the RI State Police and other state agencies, are working diligently to recover the vehicle. Conditions are extremely challenging for dive teams due to the strong current and poor underwater visibility. We will continue to provide updates as they become available, and we ask that you please keep the family and their loved ones in your prayers as our first responders continue recovery efforts.
"Heartbroken"
"The City of Pawtucket is deeply heartbroken by the tragic incident unfolding near the Taft Street boat ramp. Our hearts are with the families, loved ones, and all those affected during this incredibly difficult time," said Grebien in a statement shortly after 9 AM on Monday.
"We continue to hold hope as search efforts remain underway, and we are profoundly grateful to our first responders and partner agencies for their tireless dedication, professionalism, and compassion," Grebien added. "We ask the community to keep everyone impacted in their thoughts and to respect the privacy of the families as this situation continues to unfold."
The City of Pawtucket did not release any details of the incident, including information regarding occupants in the vehicle.
