Time to Answer Question in Smithfield - William Hawkins

As a concerned Smithfield resident, I believe our community deserves clear answers regarding the recent handling of disciplinary issues within the Smithfield High School football program and the alleged recent hazing and bullying of a Jewish student.

Residents are still left wondering: Who knew what, and when? Who decided to overrule the players’ suspensions, and at whose request? Did the Superintendent act independently, or was she influenced by others? What actions were originally taken by the Coach and Athletic Director when the allegations first surfaced?

It’s also important to know whether School Committee members or administrators held private discussions — by phone, text, or in person — about this matter outside of public session. If so, when and where did these conversations occur?

This situation is not about football. It’s about respect, trust, integrity, and accountability — values that should guide every decision made in our schools. Parents, students, and taxpayers deserve openness and honesty from district leadership. All students should feel safe and welcome not only in our schools but in our town itself.

I urge the School Committee and administration to answer these questions directly and publicly so that confidence in our schools can be restored. If you can’t do that, then you all should resign your positions if elected. If hired or appointed, you all should be fired for the embarrassment and heartache you have caused this community.

William Hawkins lives in Smithfield. He is a graduate, and his children attended Smithfield High School.
