This Week at GA: Hearings on Abortion Coverage, Taxing Nonprofits, Vehicle Emissions Bills

Legislation regarding abortion coverage, taxing nonprofits, and changing the state’s vehicle emissions standards are just some of the bills being heard at the Rhode Island General Assembly this week.
Abortion Coverage
GET THE LATEST BREAKING NEWS HERE -- SIGN UP FOR GOLOCAL FREE DAILY EBLASTOn Tuesday, the Senate Judiciary Committee will hear the Equality in Abortion Coverage Act (EACA) at the rise of the Senate, sometime after 4:30 PM, in Room 313 on the third floor of the State House.
The bill, 2023-S 0032, introduced by Senator Bridget Valverde (D-Dist. 35, North Kingstown, East Greenwich, South Kingstown), would provide for abortion coverage in the Medicaid program and repeals the abortion coverage exclusion for state employee insurance plans.
Taxing Nonprofits
The House Committee on Municipal Government and Housing is scheduled to meet Tuesday at the rise of the House in Room 101 on the first floor of the State House.
The committee will vote on eight bills, including 2023-H 5782A introduced by Representative Nathan W. Biah (D-Dist. 3, Providence), which would subject to taxation real property, owned by nonprofit institutions of higher education and nonprofit hospitals, but leased or occupied by for-profit persons and entities. It would also amend charters issued by the general assembly to such nonprofit institutions and hospitals, and would apply prospectively only.
Emissions Standards
On Wednesday, the Senate Committee on Environment and Agriculture is scheduled to meet at 4 p.m. in the Senate Lounge on the second floor of the State House.
The committee will consider four bills, including, 2023-S 0195 — introduced by Committee Chairwoman Alana DiMario (D-Dist. 36, Narragansett, North Kingstown, New Shoreham), which would requires the Department of Environmental Management adopt motor vehicle emissions standards based on California's promulgated standards.
