As part of Stop & Shop’s efforts to distribute over 21,000 turkeys to those in need this holiday season, the Northeast Turkey Express will deliver 1,000 turkeys to the Rhode Island Community Food Bank in Providence. The delivery is one of eight stops on Stop & Shop’s Turkey Express route throughout New England and 12 across the Northeast. The RI delivery will arrive at the RI Community Food Bank Warehouse located at 200 Niantic Avenue in Providence on November 6 at 9:45 a.m

The Rhode Island Community Food Bank currently serves more than 68,000 people that are impacted by hunger and food insecurity; a full third of those served are children under the age of 18.

“Rhode Island continues to have the highest level of food insecurity in New England,” says Andrew Schiff, CEO of the RI Community Food Bank. “With such a high demand for donations to local food banks, Stop & Shop’s donation to the Rhode Island Community Food Bank is more important than ever to help local families in need.”

Food insecurity simply means that an individual or family does not know from where or when their next meal is coming. In the United States, more than 20 percent of children live in food insecure households. That equates to 16.7 million children under the age of 18 in the United States unable to access the consistent, nutritious foods necessary for a healthy life.

“We strive to be a better neighbor both in and out of our stores and we are committed to fighting hunger in our communities year round,” said Joe Kelley, president of Stop & Shop New England. “We understand that the holidays can be particularly difficult for families in need, so we encourage everyone to share a meal and give thanks this holiday season. Together, we can help support the families who depend on hunger relief organizations when they need it most.”

Turkey Express deliveries will run through Thanksgiving.
