“Let me be very clear: On Monday, there will be a new Finance chairman,” Salvatore said.

Igliozzi announced during a committee meeting last week that he was resigning from his post, but said he had second thoughts after hearing from his colleagues, constituents and other elected officials.

Earlier in the week, Councilman Michael Correia and several other Council members planned to sponsor a resolution calling for Igliozzi to remain in his position, but the resolution was pulled from the docket Tuesday.

During Thursday’s meeting, Councilmen Kevin Jackson and Bryan Principe each offered their support for Igliozzi. Correia was not in attendance. State Rep. John Carnevale also joined Igliozzi to support his decision.

Igliozzi and Council President Pro Tempore Terry Hassett came under fire last month after proposing changes to the city’s landmark pension reform plan just days after voting in favor of the ordinance. That decision prompted Council leadership to ask for Igliozzi’s resignation which in turn triggered an attempt from dissident Council members to oust Majority Leader Seth Yurdin.

A similar situation could unfold again if Salvatore becomes the finance chairman.

Neither Council President Michael Solomon nor Yurdin wished to comment following the meeting.
