The Rhode Island Department of Education has been named a finalist in the Federal Race to the Top program, bringing it one step closer to getting $75 million in requested funding.
The funding would be used to update school curricula, mentor and train teachers, help some of the lowest-achieving public schools, and develop evaluations to improve teacher effectiveness.
The state was also one of 16 finalists the last round of applications, but ended up losing out to Delaware and Tennessee.
