Raimondo heads to China in a high profile trip.

Former Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo is headed to China on a high-profile trip -- and is being watched across the globe.

She is the top story on the front page of the Wall Street Journal and New York Times. “Everyone Wants to Talk to Gina Raimondo – Even China,” is the WSJ headline.

The Wall Street Journal writes, “Gina Raimondo is seizing her moment. The commerce secretary is heading to China this weekend for a four-day trip that will test her policy-making and diplomatic skills as well as her vision for what the Commerce Department can accomplish. A successful trip could help any ambitions Raimondo holds to advance in U.S. politics.”

An equally high profile in the NYTimes reports, “Gina Raimondo, the secretary of commerce, is heading to China on Saturday with two seemingly contradictory responsibilities: a mandate to strengthen U.S. business relations with Beijing while also imposing some of the toughest Chinese trade restrictions in years.”

Portrait and Dancing at the Ocean Mist

Raimondo was in Rhode Island a week ago to unveil her official portrait. She was also seen dancing up a storm at the Ocean Mist at a concert by John Cafferty, where she was accompanied by a half-dozen U.S. Secret Service agents.

The China trip is a high-profile opportunity for Raimondo at a time when there are near endless reports about trouble in the once vibrant Chinese economy.

It was just six weeks ago that it was disclosed that the Chinese hacked Raimondo’s computer files.

The trip is big news in China, too.

“As commerce chief, Raimondo has the dual role of promoting the sale of US goods, including to China, the country's third-largest foreign market, while also stringently curbing exports of advanced US technology. That duality means Raimondo has a balancing act to perform during her China trip, as Vice-President of the Asia Society Policy Institute Wendy Cutler put it on Tuesday: 'Her role as head of US government trade promotion efforts, while also in charge of export controls, will make it important she achieves the right balance in her meetings,'" reportsChinaDaily.com.
