School One in Providence received a $3,000 grant from the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts (RISCA) to support its Intergenerational Arts Program.

“As an arts-focused high school, School One is deeply appreciative of all the ways RISCA galvanizes the arts in Rhode Island. Our intergenerational programs have been enriching and surprising for our high school students and our older participants.  We’re grateful to be able to continue with innovative project with RISCA’s support,”  said Head of School One, Jennifer Borman.

Since 2016, School One has included older adults in its innovative intergenerational book clubs, classes, art projects, and discussion groups.

The Grant

The grant will be used in conjunction with a $21,000 grant from the Minneapolis-based Aroha Foundation, to bring together high school students and adults 55+ to explore their creativity and learn new art forms.

Unique to Rhode Island and the country, School One’s Intergenerational Arts Program fosters relationships between the generations with art-making, performing, sharing and learning.

Intergenerational Program

Starting in September, School One will offer several intergenerational arts and humanities classes including a new performing arts class, creative writing and book clubs.

School One’s next intergenerational class, Intergenerational Performing Arts: Scene Study and Performing Class, will begin on September 10 and meets weekly through November 8.
