Operation Stand Down, a nonprofit organization which aims to end homelessness among veterans, announced Monday that they would be opening a 3rd Rhode Island branch in Newport.

The Newport branch will supplement offices in Johnston and West Warwick. The Newport office will have a staff of retired military personnel available to assist veterans who are homeless, at-risk of being homeless, or looking for work. In addition, the Newport office will have a food pantry and clothing shed available to veterans.

“Through our work of serving veterans throughout Rhode Island and Southeastern Massachusetts OSDRI has seen a significant need to have a presence in the East Bay,” OSDRI Director of Communications & Development Dee DeQuattro told GoLocalProv.

“Operation Stand Down is excited to have opened a Veterans Center in Newport where we can assist veterans with everything from housing to employment as well as offer them access to a fully operational food pantry. The need for assistance among the veteran population is significant in the area, especially on Aquidneck Island were many retired or former military members end up after their service. The center is especially helpful for veterans with disabilities or transportation limitations that would prevent them from being able to visit our other locations in Johnston or West Warwick.”

A reception for the opening will be held on April 29 at 164 Broadway in Newport. For more details see osdri.org or contact Dee DeQuattro at (401) 383-4730.
