NEW: Smiley’s Latest Snow Failure - Plowing Residents In Overnight

In the latest snow removal failure in the City of Providence, some residents woke up Thursday morning to find that plows dumped piles of snow and ice onto already shoveled sidewalks and blocked their driveways.

Eleven days after the storm left 16 inches of snow in the city, Providence Mayor Brett Smiley and his administration have continued to struggle to clear streets, significantly impacting businesses, schools, and residents.

As GoLocal was first to report, the City Council hauled Department of Public Works officials in earlier this week for a hearing regarding the poor snow removal job.

Overnight, plows went through the city, clearing roads - but dumping snow and now ice back onto shoveled sidewalks and blocking previously cleared driveways.

No notice had been given to homeowners, who now have to dig out again.

"This City is Run by Incompetent People"

On Thursday morning, Paulene Belal shared the following with GoLocal.

"My daughter lives on Benefit Street, an already very tight road...how the hell has the snow been piled back onto the sidewalk she shoveled? There is zero space for her garbage bins, so she hasn't had garbage removed for two weeks now," Belal told GoLocal.

"She has a serious heart condition and had to be to work at 7 AM and comes out and the shit was blocking her in," Belal said of the city's overnight operations. "I told her to call that damn City Hall until someone comes out and clears the damn sidewalk and the base of her driveway."

"She's not doing it again and she is not paying a goddamn fine," said Belal. "This city is being run by incompetent people."
