The assailant walked into the store moments before the officer pulled in.  According to witnesses, the assailant walked behind the counter and fired a round into the lower side cabinet then pointed the gun at the clerk's head. Several customers were in the store and all fled as the shot was fired. The assailant took money from the register and walked toward the exit. As the assailant approached the door to exit, he fired two additional shots into the ceiling.

When he exited, he walked in front of the officer in his vehicle and pointed the gun at him. The officer then followed the assailant who got into a waiting car in the lot of Chop Sticks restaurant. The vehicle fled and the officer followed it onto Ruggles Street.

Shots Fired in Pursuit, Ends in Crash

On Ruggles Street, the assailant reached out the passenger window and fired at least one round at the officer as he was pursuing and broadcasting. The officer was not hit.

Two responding patrol officers picked up the pursuit and followed it down Chad Brown Street, Admiral to Charles and the vehicle crashed in North Providence on Mineral Spring Avenue at the 146 on-ramp.

Four occupants were apprehended, two by Providence, one by North Providence and one by Rhode Island State Police.  The assailant was identified as Roberto Cruz Rivera, the driver Jeffrey McKay, vehicle occupant Kolawolw Omothsho and a 13-year-old juvenile.

A gun was recovered at the apprehension location and at first examination, police believed it may be a ghost gun. Three casings were recovered in the store and one casing was located in front of 71 Ruggles. All were transported to Central Station for questioning and charging.
