NEW: RI General Assembly Sessions, Hearings Canceled Next Week

The Rhode Island General Assembly is canceled next week.
The Rhode Island General Assembly has canceled all sessions and hearings next week due to the threat of the spread of coronavirus.

The decision was made on Friday by Speaker of the House Nick Mattiello and President of the Senate Dominick Ruggerio.

“Taking these early and prudent measures will hopefully enable us to get back to the people’s business as soon as possible. We will closely monitor the developing situation and determine future steps as warranted. We will use this time to ensure that the Department of Administration thoroughly cleans the entire State House,” said Mattiello and Ruggerio.

The decision to cancel comes a few days after the General Assembly urged the public that those who would like to testify on legislation, but wish to avoid public gatherings can submit written testimony on any bill.

As GoLocalProv reported, there have been 14 confirmed cases of coronavirus in Rhode Island.
