Beloved Rhode Islander Richard Walton's death has left many adding tributes to his rich and storied life legacy, and Rhode Island College will honor his memory by flying the college flag at half mast.

Deeply involved in many local causes, Walton become well known as an activist against poverty, homelessness, and hunger. He has served as president of Amos House and was on the board of the George Wiley Center (advocates for the poor), the Rhode Island Coalition for the Homeless, and the Slater Mill Historic Site. He was also deeply involved with Stone Soup Coffee House for 30 years.

Walton was also well-known for holding a major fundraiser every year on his birthday, and these were attended by hundreds, including governors, senators, congressional representatives, and media personalities who were in some cases his former students.

College President Nancy Carriuolo has asked that the college flag be flown at half- mast in his memory. "Richard loved our college, the students and his colleagues," Carriuolo said.
