NEW: Providence Power Restored, Outage Caused by Squirrel

The power outage was caused by a squirrel at the South Street power station.
Following a massive power outage in Providence Tuesday morning, power has been restored to 99% of the affected customers in Providence -- and it was all caused by a squirrel.

"All the power has been restored, there might be one or two still out, but yes, it's pretty much been restored," said National Grid spokesperson David Graves

"It was a squirrel at the South Street substation that got tangled in equipment, which resulted in the a failure of that piece of equipment," said Graves.  "The energy from that incident would caused that explosive sound -- it would have sounded like an explosion, but it was just the energy."

Reponse "According to Plan"

"There are animal protection devices we put on where we can, but the size of the squirrel, they can get into just about any location.  If they touch it in the right way, that's what happens," said Graves.

"The system worked the way it's supposed to, the other two substations shut down to prevent any greater damage to the system," said Graves.  "So you take a  smaller outage now to prevent greater damage."
