The complaint concerns Cantanzaro’s dealings with Fire Chief Leonard Albanese. According to NP GOP Chairman Michael Grossi, Cantanzaro questioned the Chief as to why her stepson was not hired by the North Providence Fire Department as well as challenged his authority to use a newer hiring list (which her stepson was not on) vs. the 2007 list (which had been voided).

Grossi wrote, “we feel that [Cantanzaro] has used her position as Town Council President to attempt to influence the Fire Chief to hire her stepson by using her political position and holding the Fire Department Budget in the balance.”

Grossi called Cantanzaro’s behavior “deplorable,” as it “not only affects taxpayers and citizens but compromises public safety.” He noted that the NPFD is renting equipment from other towns because theirs is, on average, over 20 years old.

“Using her position to hire more firefighters vs. replacing equipment while the town is paying rental rates and municipal aid when our equipment can't function is a travesty,” Grossi concluded.

The press conference will take place on the steps of North Providence Town Hall at 2000 Smith Street, North Providence, RI.
