New Englanders are expected to travel more than residents of other states this holiday weekend, although fewer will be doing so by car, according to AAA.

Overall, 39 million Americans are projected to drive 50 or more miles from home, a 2.5 percent decline from one year ago. But more than three million were expected to be traveling by air this weekend, up 9 percent from last year.

“AAA is projecting a decline in the number of holiday travelers mainly due to fuel prices being approximately one dollar higher than last year,” said Lloyd P. Albert, AAA Southern New England Senior Vice President of Public and Government Affairs. “Increased fuel costs are also responsible for a shift in the demographics of the typical Independence Day traveler as higher prices impact lower income households more significantly.”
