Wednesday, August 06, 2014
The Materials Recycling Facility in Johnston was evacuated and shut down Wednesday due to what is being described as a preventable smoke emergency.
Statement from RI Resource Recovery Executive Director Michael O'Connell
"This morning, the Materials Recycling Facility in Johnston was evacuated after a worker reported a small amount of smoke on the sorting line. The line was stopped immediately and emergency procedures were enacted. Any worker expressing discomfort was transported to an area hospital for evaluation. No serious injury reports are expected, and the MRF has been shut down for the day so that the source of the problem can be identified and removed.
