It’s Officially “Shark Week” - Here’s the Latest in Rhode Island

It’s now officially “Shark Week.” 

The schedule of the annual week-long television event on the Discovery Channel can be found here.

Hosted by John Cena, the week "promises to be an electrifying and unforgettable experience that will leave you in awe of the world beneath the waves."

The University of Rhode Island offers a Shark Camp this summer. APPLY HERE

As a side note, the 1974 novel by Peter Benchley that inspired that movie is now 50 years old.

 

Latest in RI

This weekend, the Rhode Island-based Atlantic Shark Institute shared the following about the latest regional news. 

In June, the organization cited the need to protect endangered species.

"Sand Tiger shark [washed ashore] this week on Tappen’s Beach in Little Compton, RI...Sand Tiger sharks are critically endangered according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), with a decreasing population, and each one is really important for researchers to gain information from. This shark is now in a freezer at NOAA and will get a complete necropsy from our partners at the Apex Predator Lab in Narragansett, RI," writes the organization.
