Following the announcement Thursday morning by Cranston Mayor Allan Fung that he would be looking to eliminate city police captains from union ranks, Cranston Police union attorney Joe Rodio responded to the proposal.

"There's a snowball's chance in hell of that happening," said Rodio.

Fung called for Cranston Police Captain Steven Antonucci to be terminated following the investigation into the ticketing scandal from last November that had been under investigation by the state police.

Antonucci also served as President of the Cranston Police Union, which prompted Fung's pronouncement that police leadership should be involved with the union.

Rodio followed up by saying, "What the Mayor is doing is an unfair labor violation. He can't unilaterally negotiate."

Rodio continued, "The union and the city just negotiated for 2012-2013. The city never put on the table the issue of captains being part of the union. We'll be going to interest arbitration on the contract for the terms and conditions."

Block Campaign Responds

"If this is a conflict of interest, Mayor Fung's just suddenly discovering this now? He's been Mayor for six years. He's had six years to deal with this," said Jeff Britt, campaign manager for Republican gubernatorial candidate Ken Block.

"During his tenure at city hall, he's reversed all of Mayor Laffey's reforms," Britt continued. " It's not like he's a new Mayor, and just found corruption? The Chief was appointed by him. Captain Antonucci was appointed by him."

"If he wants to use conflict interest as an argument, he should not be negotiating contacts from people he was taking money from at the same time," said Britt, referring to the uncovering by GoLocal of police contributions to Mayor Fung.
