NEW: Commission studying the DMV to meet Today

The Special Senate Commission to Study the Division of Motor Vehicles is scheduled to meet today at 3 p.m. in the Senate Lounge on the second floor of the State House.

Brian Ursino, director of law enforcement for the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators will give a presentation at the meeting. Ursino works to encourage collaboration between law enforcement and motor vehicle administrators to improve highway and public safety.

There will also be an opportunity for the public to offer testimony.

The special commission’s mission is to study and issue findings about customer service at the DMV; current and new technologies available to design, manufacture and issue license plates; the period of time it takes for license plates to be issued; inventory management; and the use of license plates by law enforcement and toll authority cameras.

The commission, which was created as a result of legislation (2011-S 1099) sponsored by Senate Majority Leader Dominick J. Ruggerio (D-Dist.4, North Providence, Providence), is led by Sen. Louis P. DiPalma (D-Dist. 12, Middletown, Newport, Little Compton, Tiverton) and also includes Sen. Frank Lombardo III (D-Dist. 25, Johnston), Sen. David E. Bates (R-Dist. 32, Barrington, Bristol), Division of Motor Vehicles Director Lisa Holley, Joe Flaherty representing the Rhode Island correctional industries, Capt. David Tikoian of the Rhode Island State Police, Paulette Hamilton representing the Rhode Island League of Cities and Towns, Kathi O’Connor representing the Rhode Island Bridge and Turnpike Authority and Timothy Chapman as a member of the public appointed by the Senate president.
