NEW: Chafee Nominates Dennis Duffy to RI Board of Education

Governor Lincoln D. Chafee announced Wednesday his nomination of Dennis J. Duffy of Cranston for the Board of Education, filling the seat vacated by Michael Grande.
“Dennis has more than two decades of experience as the Vice President of Energy Management, Inc., a leading developer of traditional and renewable energy projects, and as a former partner in the law firm of Partridge, Snow and Hahn as chair of the firm’s Public Utilities Practice Group. As a leader in the field, he will bring to the Board of Education valuable insight, perspective, and expertise,” Governor Chafee said. “I thank Michael for his service to the State of Rhode Island and being a valuable member of this Board.”
The Board of Education is the chief policy-setting body overseeing K-20 education in Rhode Island. Through its designated powers and duties, the Board helps shape the course of public education to ensure that all of the state's students receive the best possible education.

Duffy is a member of the Rhode Island and Massachusetts Bar Associations, and he has been an adjunct professor of law at Boston College Law School since 2010. He is a graduate of Cranston High School East, the University of Rhode Island and Columbia University Law School. His community involvement has included service as Director of Special Olympics Rhode Island.

On Friday November 22, the Hassenfeld Institute for Public Leadership at Bryant University, the Latino Policy Institute of Roger Williams University, the Rhode Island Association of School Committees, the Providence Student Union, and RI-CAN: Rhode Island Campaign for Achievement Now will host Rhode Island leaders in the public and nonprofit sectors for a symposium on "the civil rights issue of the 21st century, adequacy and equity and the State of Education in Rhode Island."
Weighing in on the the "three biggest factors" facing education in the state today are symposium participatnts Gary Sasse, Founding Director of the Hassenfeld Institute for Leadership; Christine Lopes Metcalfe, Executive Director of RI-CAN; Anna Cano-Morales, Chairwoman of the Board of Trustees, Central Falls Public Schools and Director, Latino Policy Institute at Roger Williams University; Tim Duffy, Executive Director, RI Association of School Committees; and Deborah Cylke, Superintendent of Pawtucket Public Schools.
