Several residents attempted to climb the fence. In the ensuing melee, one Juvenile Program Worker’s jaw was broken and one Juvenile Program Worker was assaulted by eight residents.

Two additional Juvenile Program workers were injured.

Union's Calling for More Security

Local 314 and RI Council 94 AFSCME are calling for more staff and security at the school.

“For the last several years, Local 314 has raised concerns with the administration that inadequate staffing is placing, Juvenile Program Workers in danger.  In fact, Local 314 recently filed a health and safety grievance citing severe under staffing, which was endangering Training School employees.  This morning’s event is not an isolated incident. Keep in mind that many of the Training School residents have committed serious offenses,” said Jerry Minetti, president of Local 314, RI Training School Employees.

He continued, “To DCYF Director Trista Piccola’s credit, she has hired additional Juvenile Program Workers to replace staff that retired and/or went to work at other state agencies.  Additionally, Director Piccola met with us this morning to hear our concerns. Local 314 demands that the unsafe working conditions are addressed before more staff are injured.”
