There are many issues that have come up, but I believe the single biggest political issue this campaign season is the tolls. This bill was very unpopular by both the residents and the businesses of Rhode Island. This bill was forced through so quickly that it is proof that the Rhode Island political system is broken and that our elected officials don’t care about what “we the people” want. This bill is toxic and will have a great negative impact on business here in Rhode Island.

2.  What do we need to do to improve Rhode Island's economy?

To improve Rhode Island’s economy, the state needs to make changes to be more competitive with Massachusetts. Rhode Island needs to reduce fees and regulations, such as unemployment insurance and Temporary Disability Insurance, that hurt business. We need to change the laws and regulations so that every business can thrive here in Rhode Island. The state shouldn’t hand pick companies, such as General Electric and Ocean State Job Lot, to receive 13 million dollars’ worth of tax credits. The state should have consistent, fair incentives in place so that these businesses will move or stay here on their own.

3.  What is the greatest challenge facing Rhode Island as a state?

The greatest challenge facing Rhode Island is changing the one party system that has ruled state politics for over 80 years. Rhode Island needs political party balance so that officials from multiple sides (Republicans, Democrats, and Independents) can fully evaluate and debate detrimental bills such as the 38 Studios loan and Rhode Works. Removing the one party system will also help put an end to the severe political corruption that has plagued Rhode Island.

4.  Why are you running for office?

I am running for senate in District 19 for my 5-year-old daughter, Layla. I fear there will be no future here for her. Layla is just days from starting kindergarten and will spend the next 13 years in school. After she graduates, she will go on to college where my wife and I will probably pay close to 100k a year. Once my daughter gets her degree in her desired field, she like everyone else, won’t be able to find a job here in Rhode Island. My baby girl will be forced to move away from her family so that she can build a family and career of her own.

5.  Who is your inspiration?

My inspiration is my family. My wife and her family are proof that the best success comes from honesty, kindness, and respect, which are attributes sorely missing among many politicians. I’ve learned so many positive lessons from my wife and her family in the 16 years we have been together. My mother also comes to mind. My mother came to the United States when she was just 5 years old. My grandparents along with their five children left England to pursue the American dream. They came to a country where they knew that, if they worked hard, they could provide a better life for their family. Last and certainly not least is my dad. My dad grew up in poverty with no true father figure. He worked full-time while in high school to help pay the bills. My dad was not afraid to take risks that involved hard work. My father’s hard life pushed him to succeed.
