There are dozens of fire, rescue, and police officers on site at the Aspen Aerogels facility on Dexter Road in East Providence.

East Providence Mayor Bob DaSilva posted, “East Providence Fire Department and Emergency Management Agency working on an explosion and fire at Aspen Aerogels on Dexter Rd.”
The area smells like fire and chemicals.

UPDATE: East Providence Emergency Response has posted: Crews are operating at an active Multiple Casualty Incident and Structure Fire at Aspen Aerogels, 3 Dexter Rd.

At this time, East Providence and mutual aid ambulances have transported 13 people to a nearby hospital. At this time, there are no reports of major injuries.

A spokesperson for Aspen Aerogels, in an email to GoLocal, wrote:
This evening, an operational incident occurred at our East Providence facility. The site is now secure, and the situation is under control. We are working closely with local first responders, and we are grateful for their swift and professional response. Thirteen of our employees were transported to the hospital with what have been reported as minor injuries. The well-being of our colleagues is our top priority.

This is not the first incident at this site. In January, East Providence firefighters responded to a blaze at the same site.
